چکیده

Introduction Idiopathic apnea of prematurity is a common disorder that requires therapeutic intervention to avoid potential morbidity in preterm infants who require neonatal intensive care. Severe, recurrent apneic episodes may lead to multiple investigations to rule out secondary disorders leading to apnea (see accompanying article in this issue). Although the incidence of neonatal apnea is inversely related to gestational age and is probably as high as 100% in the most immature preterm infants, the onset may be delayed by the presence of lung disease in the first days of life. Apnea of prematurity, especially if severe or persistent, has been associated with poor developmental outcome in school-age children, although a cause-and-effect relationship is difficult to establish.

Effect of Caffeine and Aminophylline on Apnea of Prematurity

Background: The most common type of apnea among premature newborns is idiopathic apnea of prematurity. Recurrent apnea can lead to hypoxemia and central nervous system damage. Although caffeine and theophylline are the most commonly prescribed drugs in this field, there is disagreement about which medicine is preferred. The purpose of this study was to compare the ther...

Investigating Effect of Olfactory Stimulation by Vanilla on the Rate of Apnea Attacks in Neonates with Apnea of Prematurity: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Background Apnea of prematurity (AOP) is a developmental disorder that affects the premature newborns frequently. One of the new non-drug methods for controlling apnea attacks is olfactory stimulation. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of olfactory stimulation by vanilla on the rate of apnea attacks in neonates with AOP. Materials and Methods: This study is a single-blind random...

Intermittent hypoxic episodes in preterm infants: do they matter?

Intermittent hypoxic episodes are typically a consequence of immature respiratory control and remain a troublesome challenge for the neonatologist. Furthermore, their frequency and magnitude are underestimated by clinically employed pulse oximeter settings. In extremely low birth weight infants the incidence of intermittent hypoxia progressively increases over the first 4 weeks of postnatal lif...

Apnea of prematurity

Apnea of prematurity (AOP) is one of the most frequent pathologies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, with an incidence inversely related to gestational age. Its etiology is often multi factorial and diagnosis of idiopathic forms requires exclusion of other underlying diseases. Despite being a selflimiting condition which regresses with the maturation of the newborn, possible long-term effect...
